Meherazad

4th August 1964

Dear Amiya,

We received your letter of the 1st August, and it was read out to Baba. Baba felt happy to know that Matajee's health is now better. Baba wants that Matajee should now take care of her health and not worry about anything.

Now it is too late for us to do anything about Shri Ramanujji Varma. Baba had inquired about him during summer, and He inquired about him not once but quite a few times, and He was in a very different mood at that time. If Shri Varma had established a direct contact with Baba at that time, then it was possible that something might have been done for him by Baba, because Baba at that time was divinely inspired to remember him and of His own accord He did so, and He had sent His love so that he might come in His contact [Amiya remarks that this remarkable passage suggests that it was commonly understood by the mandali that in the right mood Baba could and would heal anyone]. Now Baba is very soon going to free him from all physical pain, and Baba is going to call Varmaji to Him very soon. It is also Varmaji's good fortune that without making any efforts he would be going to Baba and receive satgati. Now you will be definitely feeling what we said to you about lahar. You must be getting some idea about it. Lahar is never bound by cause and time. It comes all of a sudden and it is not deliberately brought. Baba's whim is beyond time or cause.

I am reminded of a story in this connection: the story of Pirani Pir. He used to live in Baghdad. And he was a perfect master. One day he was in a very happy mood, and he asked a boy, "what do you want?" The boy looked at him and said, "I want you to bring back my father to life." The father of that boy had died 12 years before. Pirani Pir asked that boy three times the same question, but the boy insisted on only one thing and that was to see that his father was made alive. And, seeing his insistence, Pirani Pir did make his father come back to life. If that boy had asked for God realization, Pirani Pir might have given it to him that very moment. Because He was in a very, very happy mood. But after his father came back to life, the boy went to Pirani Pir and now the boy wanted Him to give him God realization. But the moment had passed, and now it was not possible for Pirani Pir to give him God realization.

In the same way, the times are now different for Ramanujji Varma and Ashok Kumar his son has sent us his letter. But Baba's mood is now absolutely different and He doesn't want to do anything for him. Even so, Ramanujji has received His grace and He will keep him happy in His own proximity. We have been ordered by Baba to tell Ashok Kumarji that Baba is going to free His dear Ramanujji Varma from all his earthly pains and is going to call him to Himself, and therefore Ashok Kumar and his mother should not feel unhappy. If you get some time, please go to Ramanujji Varma and tell him to remember Baba constantly now. He must be suffering untold agony because of his illness. Therefore, the earlier Baba calls him to Himself to give up his ephemeral body, the better it would be for him.

Please do not make any questionnaire about lahar. If you have any questions about it, then individually when you come to Poona you can ask me about them.

Baba feels very happy to know that Dr. Deshmukh has attended many programs held in Jabalpur and has created a great interest in the people there about Baba.

When Baba stops giving darshan even in Poona, the question of Baba giving darshan in Jabalpur does not arise. Therefore, you only keep on praying that Baba gives his darshan to everyone in Poona next year.

Baba is happy with you and sends you His love, to Matajee, to Gauri and also his love-filled kiss to Mehernandini.

Jai Baba

Yours affectionately,

Bhau

Editor's note: As so often, Amiya's whimsical sense was aroused by the idea of God's whim (lahar). He said, "Could this lahar mean that even in God's case there may be acts that contain no volition, no planning, no deliberation, no pre-meditation? Such acts might even surprise God!"
