25th June 1965

Dear Amiya,

Your letter of 22nd June was received here and it was read out to Beloved Baba.

We have not received any letter from Varmajee. If he had written a letter it would have been better, because Baba Himself had remembered him.

Baba's lahar can do anything, and there is no cause for Baba's lahar. It is independent of any cause. But, Baba does everything according to His own divine law, in a very spontaneous way. If He has to effect even a very, very small change, then He has to effect corresponding changes throughout the innumerable creations in the cosmos and in the worlds that He has created, because everything is related to everything else, and even one small change will mean changing the entire setup throughout creation. Because in an indescribable way, all the sanskaras get related to all the other sanskaras, and they are mutually connected.

The Avatar makes lots of changes, but all these changes are also determined by His primal whim, and that whim has created a mould, and even the Avatar's will is in that primal mould1.

For example, to give a dog a human birth is a leap of evolution. This will be definitely a very surprising thing, and people will take this to be a miracle. But, if this is done then you have to understand that the Avatar had already decided that He would do this, and that is exactly how all the innumerable things the Avatar does are also determined by His fundamental will.

Therefore, Baba says that He does not perform any miracles. Why He says this is because whatever He wants to do, He is doing it. But people take these events in the form of miracles, and by calling them miracles they not only start losing their own faith, but also make others lose their faith and their conviction in miracles2 shakes their conviction about God.

If the Avatar wants, and if the whim comes to Him, then He can make even a stone realize God and become God within no time, but as His lahar is nothing but a lahar, it cannot be intellectually understood or explained. The Avatar's work is spread throughout innumerable creations, and this work goes on every second, and it involves the gross, subtle and mental consciousness also, but these levels of consciousness are not competent to understand the Avatar's activities.

When the Avatar has a lahar, this lahar can give God Realization to anything or anyone, without that entity having to go through the evolutionary or involutionary processes, but all these things are beyond understanding.

But, how can we understand all this? Everything that subsequently comes to happen is implicit in the first most set of impressions [the Hindi word translates literally into "mould" -- Amiya suggests the image of a cookie cutter to explain the concept behind the word] made by the Avatar. Only the Avatar is able to make changes on a universal scale -- changes that affect world events across the whole globe.

Everyone, of course, has to go through the process of Evolution and Involution, but if the Avatar showers His grace, then what might have taken many, many cycles of time can be effected through a second, or instantaneously.

Now we see that last year, a cat used to come from some other bungalow to this place3, and that cat used to sit only in Baba's room, and also nestle close to Baba's feet 4 whenever Baba used to sit in Baba's room. Baba used to take the cat into His lap and used to feed her milk, and also give her His love. In her next birth, she will definitely become a human being. But, how can this be explained in terms of evolution?

Now the arrival of the cat and the frequent visits to this bungalow have also made the owner of the cat become a lover of Baba. This year, the cat is getting Baba's sahavas, but the cat's owners are not receiving it. Even when Baba goes away from Guruprasad, the cat tries to remain at Guruprasad. Passing through Evolution and Involution is a "must" for everyone. But when the Avatar comes, He helps us all to a very great measure in both evolution and involution, and gives a tremendous push towards the spiritual unfoldment of all. The Avatar is not chained by anything, and whenever the lahar comes to Him, He can do whatever He wishes to do. His grace cannot be described in words. This world and other worlds also go on changing, and when Mahapralaya comes, their positions and states also change.

The Avatar had already from the very beginning decided the destiny-mould of each soul and has also determined the changes He has to effect in every age (cycle of time). The all-knowingness of God excludes the very idea of uncertainty. Therefore, evolution and involution are absolutely certain phenomena, and changes in them are also certainties.

Baba is pleased with you and Baba sends His love to you, to Sister Gauri, to Matajee and His love filled kiss to His dear Mehernandini.

[And as a sort of postscript5, Bhau adds]

Please take it to be certain that there will be evolution and involution both, but the Avatar gives an indescribably powerful push and progress when He comes, and that is why whenever it is necessary He has to come.

1. Amiya remarks, "Perhaps he means that the seeds of the changes are already there, so here is another problem for us, determinism and free will, and not only that but 'whim'."

2. Amiya remarks, "Suppose you are just a miracle-oriented person. That is, your faith is miracle-oriented. The moment miracles stop, you lose everything."

3. Guruprasad

4. Amiya remarks, Ive seen this cat myself. The cat did not care for anyone else. I would just go to Beloved Baba and sit at His feet like a devotee." Editor notes that this cat, "Pegu" is on its way to becoming famous, thanks to Baba's sister Mani's account of the cat's exploits.

5. Inspecting the original letter shows that there is no space left on the paper, so Bhau left off his customary signature, which typically reads "Jai Baba, Affectionately yours, Bhau".
