20 February 1964

Dear Amiya,

Your letter of 12th February was received along with two poems, one written by you in English and the other written by Dinesh in Hindi.

Both poems were read out to Baba, and also your letter. Baba was greatly pleased to hear [the poems and the letter] and He praised His son.

Baba will not give His darshan to anyone this year and will be in uninterrupted seclusion even in Poona. Therefore after one year whenever Baba gives His darshan you can bring a team of your students here. Meanwhile help them to maintain their enthusiasm [for Baba's darshan] and try to bring them closer to Baba through encouraging their love for Him.

Shortly, a circular will be sent everywhere about Baba closing the door to darshan. But now start telling all concerned about [the material contained in the circular]. Keep informing people not to try to go for darshan.

Maintain your contact with Sri Gopinath Kaviraj, and continue to send him some of Baba's discourses and messages from time to time. If you had told him about having Baba's darshan in Poona, then do inform him that Baba's darshan will not take place this year.

Give Baba's love to the elder brother [Ramanujji Varma] of Dr. Ramkumar Varma, who lives in Jabalpur and also convey Baba's love to his wife and inform them that Baba is very much pleased with them. Also tell them that Baba is not going to give His darshan to anyone this year, and will remain in seclusion. Therefore they should wait for His darshan until He agrees to give it. Nevertheless, they should keep remembering Baba and try to keep Him constantly with them.

The photograph of Baba wearing the crown is available with Bhikhu Bhai. A letter was sent to him to send it to you but I do not know why he did not send it.

Here is his address for you. Write to him to send it to you by V.P. [collect] as soon as possible. Bhikhu Bhai's address is:

Bhikhu Bhai Panarkar

Prop. Meelan Photo Studio,

Appa Balwant Chowk

25, Budhwar Peth,

POONA -- 2

Baba is very much pleased with you and sends His love to you, Matajee, Gauri, Mehernandini and Dinesh.

Jai Baba

Affectionately yours,

Bhau

Amiya comments: "I felt that the implication intended in the fourth paragraph is that if anyone from Jabalpur shows up in Poona for darshan, I would get a kick from the mandali. But, if I should tell people from Jabalpur not to go, I would tend to reap the fruits of their disappointment. They would say to me 'Who are you to tell me not to go for darshan? In what capacity?' So, like that Baba put me on the hot seat."

Editor's note: Amiya feels, in addition, that something might have happened -- someone might have broken down the gates, might have behaved badly and caused Baba to close the door to darshan. Of course it is all speculation on Amiya's part.
